Framatome to provide cybersecurity services for a nuclear facility safety technology project

Oct 5, 2021 | Press Release

October 5, 2021 – Framatome recently signed a contract with RWE Nuclear GmbH to provide consulting and support services for the development of an autonomous cybersecurity solution for a nuclear facility at a shutdown nuclear power plant in Germany.

“Our Framatome team offers extensive expertise as a provider of cybersecurity solutions, including safeguards of instrumentation and control systems, for the nuclear energy industry,” said Frédéric Lelièvre, senior executive vice president of Sales, Regional Platforms and the Instrumentation and Control Business Unit at Framatome. “This project supports long-term efforts related to dismantling and decommissioning German plants, as well as Framatome’s goals outlined in its international cybersecurity road map.”

Framatome will consult on the implementation of the IT security infrastructure legal requirements and support the client’s project team in complying with the requirements for equipment selection, installation and approval. The project also includes the construction of a new guard station and operations building, installation of security fence detection equipment, and other cyber services to enhance security in existing systems. The project is expected to be completed in 2024.

All systems must run in a self-sufficient network within the premises without direct access to the internet and protected against external attacks. The establishment of self-sufficiency of the facility is divided into two phases: 1) plant security self-sufficiency, and 2) construction of a new administration and technical building including a control room for the operating team and the object security service.

For project execution, RWETI GmbH has been commissioned by RWE Nuclear GmbH for operational project management, various specialist functions, construction management and ongoing contract management.

Already experienced in cybersecurity projects in the nuclear field, like this new contract with RWE Nuclear GmbH, Framatome is also leveraging the cybersecurity expertise of U.S.-based FoxGuard Solutions for the European industry, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Framatome.
